How close does Bill get to a British Columbia bull elk? In Part 2, a responsive bull closes to just 12 yards—but a clear, ethical shot never opens. Then, in an unbelievable turn, a wolf appears only a few yards behind the callers and changes the encounter completely.
Days two and three test the team with steep climbs, thick timber, punishing bushwhacking and bulls that bugle once before going silent. Viewers get an honest look at backcountry archery elk hunting: long stretches of waiting, changing thermals, difficult terrain and the patience required to make the right move at the right time.
After returning to an area where they heard elk the previous day, the team gets below a bull and begins calling. He comes in aggressively, rakes a tree and remains within close range for several minutes. Bill carefully shifts positions, looking for an unobstructed view of the bull’s vitals, but the timber never provides a clean shooting lane.
While the bull hangs up, the calling sequence also pulls a wolf to within two or three yards of the callers. When the wolf finally bolts, it spooks the elk and ends Bill’s opportunity.
